Soft as a baby's bottom

The definition of wonderful skin is having skin like a baby's. However keeping a baby's skin wonderful is not always as easy as the saying implies, especially when we're talking about bottoms.

Some babies are prone to nappy rash more than others, but following these simple steps can really help keep your baby's bottom beautifully clean and soft.

  • Change your baby's nappy regularly - every couple of hours and as soon as possible after it becomes wet and/or soiled
  • Cleanse your baby's bottom using plain cool boiled water and cotton wool. Avoid using wipes on babies under 6 weeks old.
  • Try to avoid using baby powder, as this can clog the skin and cause irritation
  • Take your baby's nappy off at least twice a day – babies love to kick and stretch when their nappies are taken off and the exposure to fresh air is very good for your baby's skin
  • Wash your baby's bottom in their bath using aqueous cream, which ensures they are well-moisturised as well as clean

Apply a thin layer of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to your baby's bottom after cleansing, to help keep the skin soft and protected (be careful not to apply too thick a layer of Vaseline, as this may affect the absorbency of your baby’s nappy)

Nappy rash

Nappy rash is the name given to the red rash that sometimes appears on a baby in the area covered by a nappy, and can be extremely painful for your baby. It is caused by irritation and sometimes by infection, breaking down the natural protective skin barrier.

If your baby does develop nappy rash:

  • Be extra vigilant about changing your baby's nappy regularly
  • Cleanse your baby's bottom with unperfumed oil (eg olive oil) and cotton wool, instead of water or wipes. This will be less painful for your baby
  • Leave your baby's nappy off as often as possible, to allow plenty of fresh air to get to the skin to encourage healing
  • Apply a specific nappy rash barrier cream (such as zinc and castor oil cream) to the affected area to help protect the skin
  • Make sure your baby is drinking plenty of fluids, as this will reduce the acidity of the urine
  • If using cloth nappies, ensure you wash them in non-bio washing detergent (such as Persil Non-Bio) and rinse well.

If the nappy rash persists or worsens, you should consult your doctor or health professional.
