Supply Chain and Transport Awards 2009

02-06-2009 :

Organised by ITP Business Publishing the lavish awards ceremony took place at the Mina A’Salam, Dubai and gathered more than 200 top executives from the Middle East transportation and logistics industries.

The SCATAs set out to raise the profile of the industry and reward and recognize those that have made significant contributions to the progression and development of the region’s supply chain industry. The awards acknowledge the leaders as well as the newcomers who have invested in technology, implemented winning strategies and invested both time and resources to ensure the local industry not only meets international standards but often exceeds them.

17 awards were presented at the ceremony with categories covering the logistics, sea freight and air cargo sectors. The winners were judged by a prestigious panel of industry figureheads, selected from within the Middle East logistics industry.

This year’s independent judging panel included:

Issa Baluch, founder of Swift Freight International and author of Transport Logistics – Past, Present and Predictions,

Captain Mansoor Ghafoor, CEO of STALCO Group and president of the National Association of Freight Logistics,

Doctor Kanak Madrecha, senior manager of DP World and founding member of the Supply Chain & Logistics Group,

Doctor Cedwyn Fernandes, MBA programme coordinator at Middlesex University Dubai, and

Sebastian Thomas, logistics manager of Al-Futtaim’s retail division and winner of the Logistics Manager of the Year award at the inaugural SCATA ceremony.

Also joining the panel this year were industry leaders Ali Al Jallaf, vice-president of Dubai Airports Cargo Unit, and Salma Hareb, CEO of Economic Zones World.

Walid Akawi CEO of ITP Publishing Group said “We are proud to hold the 3rd Supply Chain & Transport Awards and are delighted with the level of interest and participation that the industry has shown this year. The awards reflect Logistics Middle East’s standing in the Middle East’s supply chain industry and it is our pleasure to give something back. The winners were well deserved and our congratulations go out to them all.”

Highlights of the night included the surprise victory of Ras Al Khaimah Free trade Zone in Industrial Area of the Year award. Another surprise but well-deserved victory was in the Port Authority & Terminal Operator of the Year for Sharjah-based Gulftainer.

In the hotly contested, Outstanding Achievement Award, Gulf Agency Company outdid all. The judges felt the winner has undoubtedly become a name to reckon with in the Middle East and throughout the world, often used as a case study for its successful operations.

The evening ended with His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of Dubai World being honoured with the Hall of Fame Award.
