After graduating in 1973, Howard Green joined Unilever in its Corporate Audit department and has since held a wide range of finance jobs across the breadth of Unilever.
Group Controller & SVP Finance Categories
Starting in Corporate Audit and in subsequent jobs he gained a broad exposure to Unilever’s operating activities in both the UK and in developing and emerging markets. In 1993, as head of Finance & IT, he joined a newly established group responsible for the development of Unilever’s business in Central & Eastern Europe. This involved the establishment of on-shore operating companies in a number of countries and included a number of acquisitions.
In 1996 he became head of Finance & IT for the newly established Latin America Business Group where the emphasis was on developing the business beyond its traditional areas of strength of HPC in the Southern Cone. This period also saw the development of new ways of working that has provided many of the elements in the subsequent ‘One Unilever’ operating framework.
In 2000 he became head of Investor Relations before moving to the job of Chief Auditor in August 2004. However, in March 2005, with the announcement of ‘One Unilever’ he was appointed SVP Finance & IT for the newly created Europe Region where the emphasis was, on the one-hand addressing business underperformance in Western Europe, whilst on the other seizing the continuing growth opportunity in Central & Eastern Europe.
In November 2007 he was appointed Group Controller and SVP Finance Categories.
Howard is married to Sue and has three daughters, a son and four grandsons. In his spare time he plays hockey and golf, is passionate about Crystal Palace Football Club, loves the music of Eric Clapton and is kept busy trying to keep track of his children and keeping up with his grandchildren!
